Teaching Critical Thinking via the Paideia Seminar
Are you frustrated by your students’ inability to think critically and coherently?Would you benefit from a method for teaching them to think about the ideas and values in your curriculum
We define thinking as the ability to explain and manipulate complex systems successfully; in the sense that we use the term, a folk tale by the Brothers Grimm is a system; the Preamble to the Constitution is a system; a word problem in Algebra is a system; and the Periodic Table of the Elements is a very complex system.
The Paideia Seminar is a formal, intellectual dialogue facilitated with open-ended questions about a text. It is one of the most powerful ways to teach the ideas and values that shape your curriculum, thereby making it both more accessible and more relevant for your students.
This Institute is for K-12 teachers across all subject areas. This training will prepare you to plan, lead, and assess Paideia Seminars so that your classroom or school will become an increasingly thoughtful environment and your students will gain the thinking skills they need to succeed to be successful in the 21st Century
