The  2009 Annual Paideia Conference

Habits of Mind for A Good Life

On March 5-6, 2009, the National Paideia Center hosted its 16th Annual Paideia Conference at the Graylyn International Conference Center in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. In many ways, the location of this year’s conference was appropriate: the former Bowman Gray estate was conducive to adults considering themselves as lifelong learners who happened to be educators. In addition, this conference, like several recent annual events, was international in nature as a team from South Africa added their experience and insight to the Paideia community. In our plenary meetings, our conference seminar (on an excerpt from Plutarch’s biography of Solon), and our breakout sessions, we studied together the nature of the “good life” as well as the habits of mind that make it possible. And as always, we left the annual reunion of the Paideia “family” with renewed spirit and vigor.
