"The desire to construct a tangible product of the highest quality is a powerful motivator for students, especially when that product has both intrinsic value for the students and value to an authentic external audience. Only when they sense the relevance and authenticity of classroom work will most students commit to the very real labor of learning."
(Terry Roberts, NPC)

Graduation Project Design and Assessment

Would you like to have in hand a plan for preparing the Class of 2010 to complete high quality Graduation Projects?

As you know, the State’s new Graduation Project requirement has four primary components: a research paper, a product, a portfolio, and a presentation. These elements require extensive collaboration between the school and community as well as authentic, ongoing work on the part of the student.

The “Graduation Project Design and Assessment Institute” is intended to assist a team from your school in creating a comprehensive plan for integrating the four elements of the Project into one coherent process resulting in quality student work. We will draw on the experiences of Paideia schools from across the country that have successfully implemented portfolio driven Projects as part of their graduation requirements.

This Institute will be led by Laura Billings and Terry Roberts, both of whom were involved in the original creation of the Paideia Project unit design and authors of “Intellectual Coaching and the Paideia Project.” Your team will leave this institute with a detailed and coherent plan for guiding students (and their parents) through the process, resulting in a meaningful and quality product.
