"Teaching American History"

The National Paideia Center has worked with the Horry County, South Carolina, public school system since the summer of 2005 to assist in the implementation of a system-wide Teaching American History grant from the US Department of Education.  Under the direction of Horry County's Jeanie Dailey, K-12 Social Studies Learning Specialist, we have trained dozens of Social Studies teachers in Paideia Seminar facilitation so that they could integrate seminar discussion into the enriched units on American History that they were planning with American History scholars recruited specifically for the project. The result has been a renewed sense of rigor and significance in the teaching of American History in Horry County as well as a focus on student understanding of the core ideas and values that are the foundation of American Democracy.  We are especially pleased to feature the Horry County Teaching American History Project on our web site because our 2008 National Conference Theme, "The Paradox of Democracy: Government of the People, by the People, and for the People" (March 27-28 in Chapel Hill, North Carolina) is closely related to our ongoing work with these special educators.
