Paideia School Memberships

The Paideia School

What does it mean to be a Paideia School?    From our perspective, a Paideia School is a learning community (including faculty, parents, and students) aligned with Paideia Philosophy as described by the ancient Greeks and more recently in The Paideia Proposal.

We, at the National Paideia Center, work in schools across the United States, in Sweden, Chile, and the Philippines.

Membership Process

Schools are invited to apply for Paideia Membership.  Paideia School Membership is a way of classifying schools according to their level of commitment and implementation of Paideia philosophy and teaching methods.

Given the ever changing nature of schools, the Paideia School Membership is a one or two year designation.  A school may self-select or be invited to participate based on: teaching and learning practices, school culure, leadership, scheduling, and community involvement.

Paideia School Memberships give schools international recognition for their efforts and shows parents and interested parties what Paideia looks like in real life.

The two levels of Paideia School Memberships are: Affiliate and Partner Schools.   Memberships are effective July 1- June 30 and applications may be received no later than the first week of January.

Paideia School Memberships are based on a comprehensive self-assessment conducted by local parties.  Representatives of the school look for evidence of Paideia philosophy and practices.

Paideia Affiliate School Membership

The Paideia Affiliate School Membership requires an “acceptable” level of implementation as indicated by the Paideia School Rubric based on assessment of a representative group.  The representative group for Affiliate Membership should include: a school based administrator, a teacher, and either a parent or a student.  Each representative of this group should read through the Paideia School Rubric and score each item as accurately as possible.  While many of the Rubric indicators address classroom practices, the scoring should be based on the school as a whole.  After each representative has completed the Rubric scoring, the group should then spend some time together discussing their ratings.  One member should compile the scores to summarize the rating.   Given an “acceptable” status, based on an average of all categories on the Paideia School Rubric, a representative should then complete and submit  the Affiliate Paideia School application.

Cost for the Paideia Affiliate School Membership is $500.00 annually.

The Paideia Affiliate School Membership includes:

international recognition by placement on our website list (see Paideia Affiliate Schools);

a two hour electronic consulting session;

and a framed  Paideia Affiliate School certificate .

Paideia Partner School Membership

Paideia Partner School Membership is a bi-yearly designation and is included in a contractual relationship with The National Paideia Center.

Paideia Partner Schools establish membership through a contract that includes at least one on-site visit.  During this visit, a collaborative assessment process identifies steps toward an excellent level of implementation on the Paideia School Rubric.

In addition, Paideia Partner Schools agree to host visitors interested in seeing Paideia in the real world (visitors program).

Cost for the Partner School Membership is $2,500.  The Paideia Partner School Membership includes:

international recognition by placement on our website list (see Paideia Partner Schools);

a face-to-face consulting session;

and a Paideia Partner School Banner.
